What is normal and what is not? That is the question that many women ask themselves regarding their vaginal discharge. But the flow tells us much more than we think. Vaginal discharge is an indicator of how we are, it will always tell us something about ourselves and our body. Do you want to know what types of vaginal discharge are, what is it due to and what is it trying to tell you? But remember that whenever you notice that something is wrong, you will have to go to your gynecologist to check what is happening.

How to know what type of flow we have

  • Light colored vaginal discharge. If your vaginal discharge is light in color, it looks like elastic mucus similar to raw egg whites, it is telling you that everything is normal. You will have this type of discharge from the beginning of your cycle and at ovulation the quantity will increase since the viscosity of the vaginal discharge helps the sperm to reach its goal; the ovule.
  • Milky white vaginal discharge. If you have this type of vaginal discharge it is totally normal. From the middle to the end of your cycle, your vaginal discharge becomes creamier due to the release of progesterone. Vaginal discharge helps sperm on its way to the egg, the creamier it is, and the easier it will be for sperm to reach.
  • Discharge lumpy and bad smell. This type of discharge usually tells you that you have a vaginal infection, it can be caused by various reasons, but the most common are due to a fungal infection. You will have to see your doctor, but at the same time avoid wearing synthetic underwear, it is better to wear cotton clothes. Likewise, you will have to avoid moisture in the vagina area.
  • brown discharge. The brown discharge is usually oxidized blood, so it is about spotting between periods. It is quite common if you are taking the birth control pill. If you do not take the pill and it is an isolated incident, do not give it much importance, on the other hand, if you see that it happens again, then you will have to see your doctor to see what exactly is happening.
  • Yellow discharge and smells bad. If, in addition to the yellow color, your vagina smells bad and itches, you should see your doctor as soon as possible because it could be gonorrhea, chlamydia, or a pelvic infection. But remember that sometimes the color of the discharge that you see in the panties does not have to be the real color, because you may see it yellow because it oxidizes in the air but it is really a light or milky color. If it doesn’t itch or smell bad, you don’t have to worry.
  • Greyish and green vaginal discharge. Bacterial vaginosis can be the cause of this, plus it will smell fishy and you will have a horrible burning sensation. It is a common infection and can be easily treated with a cream or pills prescribed by your doctor. It is uncomfortable but usually subsides after a few days.
  • Watery vaginal discharge. If your vaginal discharge is too watery, there may be a herpes infection or open sores inside the vagina. You will have to go to the doctor.
